Reb could have wished that Marcia had told her about what went down with Cato and Madeleine in the bargeyard rather sooner. Immediately after it happened might have been good. Sheâd quite like to have known about their initial falling-out, as well. But she knew now; and she could try to do something about it.
However twitchy she felt â they didnât have time for this shit, they had much more important things to do â she didnât challenge Cato the moment he was through the door, because that would only lead to him turning round and going straight back out of it again. She was surprised enough that heâd come when she sent the message. Instead she offered him a chair, a mug of rosemary and liquorice infusion from the seller that worked on her street, and a basket of plain rolls. Cato tended to forget to eat at the best of times.
He looked absolutely terrible; not just that he clearly hadnât slept enough lately, but he was haggard, almost distraught-looking. And he smelt like heâd been drinking to an extent that he hadnât for a while. That, she suspected, was about the business with Madeleine, and possibly with Tait, but first things first. Marcia was worried about Catoâs emotional state, fine; but Reb had other priorities.
âWhat,â she demanded, âwere you doing down at the barge-yard yesterday?â
For a moment, Cato looked as if he were about to get up out of the chair and leave, infusion and all notwithstanding; then he slumped, very slightly.
âTrying to find out how to solve this little problem we have, if you remember it?â His tone was sarcastic, but there was barely any life in it.
âYes. The problem we have. Weâre supposed to be working together, did you remember that?â He shrugged, and Reb gritted her teeth. âWhat if youâd gotten shot? Iâd know nothing about what youâve been up to, or if youâd had an idea you were trying out, or anything. Iâd be starting from scratch, except Iâm not the one with the knowledge, so basically, Iâd be screwed. Weâd all be screwed.â
âNice to have my expertise acknowledged,â Cato drawled, but there was a flicker of something that might have been guilt in his eyes. And surprise? Heâd been expecting her to be talking about Marcia and Madeleine, sheâd bet. Time for that in a moment.
âLook. I know â we both know â that youâre the one whoâs most likely to be able to come up with something. And we both know that we need a solution, beforeâ¦â Her voice died away. Before Beckett gets overwhelmed, before they try to overwhelm Beckett â because they both knew that Beckett couldnât hold out against this many. It was peculiar enough that Selene hadnât been pushing already. Politics, maybe; Marcia had theories.
âYeah. All right.â Cato scrubbed at his face with a hand.
âSo you canât just wander off without telling me anything. You canât just put yourself at risk like that. You ââ
âI get it, all right? It wonât happen again.
