Reb could have wished that Marcia had told her about what went down with Cato and Madeleine in the bargeyard rather sooner. Immediately after it happened might have been good. She’d quite like to have known about their initial falling-out, as well. But she knew now; and she could try to do something about it.

However twitchy she felt – they didn’t have time for this shit, they had much more important things to do – she didn’t challenge Cato the moment he was through the door, because that would only lead to him turning round and going straight back out of it again. She was surprised enough that he’d come when she sent the message. Instead she offered him a chair, a mug of rosemary and liquorice infusion from the seller that worked on her street, and a basket of plain rolls. Cato tended to forget to eat at the best of times.

He looked absolutely terrible; not just that he clearly hadn’t slept enough lately, but he was haggard, almost distraught-looking. And he smelt like he’d been drinking to an extent that he hadn’t for a while. That, she suspected, was about the business with Madeleine, and possibly with Tait, but first things first. Marcia was worried about Cato’s emotional state, fine; but Reb had other priorities.

“What,” she demanded, “were you doing down at the barge-yard yesterday?”

For a moment, Cato looked as if he were about to get up out of the chair and leave, infusion and all notwithstanding; then he slumped, very slightly.

“Trying to find out how to solve this little problem we have, if you remember it?” His tone was sarcastic, but there was barely any life in it.

“Yes. The problem we have. We’re supposed to be working together, did you remember that?” He shrugged, and Reb gritted her teeth. “What if you’d gotten shot? I’d know nothing about what you’ve been up to, or if you’d had an idea you were trying out, or anything. I’d be starting from scratch, except I’m not the one with the knowledge, so basically, I’d be screwed. We’d all be screwed.”

“Nice to have my expertise acknowledged,” Cato drawled, but there was a flicker of something that might have been guilt in his eyes. And surprise? He’d been expecting her to be talking about Marcia and Madeleine, she’d bet. Time for that in a moment.

“Look. I know – we both know – that you’re the one who’s most likely to be able to come up with something. And we both know that we need a solution, before…” Her voice died away. Before Beckett gets overwhelmed, before they try to overwhelm Beckett – because they both knew that Beckett couldn’t hold out against this many. It was peculiar enough that Selene hadn’t been pushing already. Politics, maybe; Marcia had theories.

“Yeah. All right.” Cato scrubbed at his face with a hand.

“So you can’t just wander off without telling me anything. You can’t just put yourself at risk like that. You –”

“I get it, all right? It won’t happen again.
